Rosie Cunningham/The Reporter WALTON - Walton clinched the top spot in their home tournament, toppling Stamford 67- 32 in Wednesday’s championship round.

Warrior Tommy Maguire earned tournament MVP honors by leading the Warriors to the win - which included three 3-pointers.

Maguire scored a team-high 12 points.

The Warriors (2-0), a fast paced team, got an early lead and ended the first quarter with a 24-7 advantage. The squad continued to outscore the Indians in each frame.

Walton’s Isaac Vesterfelt scored eight points for the Warriors, and Jose Maribol, who earned all-tournament honors, scored six.

Stamford’s Dan Olson led the team with 15 points in the loss and was selected to the all-tournament team.

“Jose, Tommy and Dylan Jacob really stood out in the tournament,” said Walton head coach David Gardepe. “We are a small, but fast team.”

The seven year Walton coach said on the defensive end, Maguire and Jacob were hard to handle. Jacob had a combined 16 steals in the two games of the tournament while Maguire had 11. He added that Brett Charles was also a standout on the defensive end.

“It’s always nice to win the first couple games of the season,” said Gardepe. “I hope to keep this going - the MAC league is a tough one this season.”
