Get Woke! Film Series on Race Kicks Off with ‘Black Panther’

Local organizers and members of SUNY Delhi, will launch the second season of the Get Woke! Film Series & Conversations on Race on Sunday, Oct. 21 with the 2018 film Black Panther. The free screening is scheduled for 4 p.m. at SUNY Delhi’s Sanford Hall,Room 250. A conversation about the film, and what it means for the local community, will follow. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

The SUNY Delhi History Club, with the support of SUNY Delhi history professor Dan Gashler, co-sponsors the series.

The film is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, who leads the mythical African nation of Wakanda. The film with its almost all-black cast, is a visual and musical treat – but also explores complex issues related to race, power, and political change.

Get Woke! organizers will host movies on select Sundays at 4 p.m. throughout the winter and early spring. A screening of Spike Lee’s BlacKKKlansman is scheduled for Nov. 18, at SUNY Delhi’s Sanford Hall. The film is based on the true story of an African-American police detective who sets out to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan.
