NYSPHSAA Classification Cutoff Numbers to Change in 2018-19

By Tom Coddington

TROY — In its February executive committee meeting, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) approved a proposal to revise the five classification cut-off numbers for boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball and softball.

Class D will be 149 students and below, Class C 150-269, Class B 270-499, Class A 500- 964, and Class AA 965 and above.

In other action, the baseball state committee agreed upon an adjustment to the regional rotation when byes create a direct berth to the state final four in Class D. If Sections I, VIII and XI do not have a team qualify for regional play, the pairings will be Sections IX and II, and Sections VII and X. The regular pairings of Sections IV and III, and V and VI will remain intact.

A game-ending procedure was also approved in baseball, with section and league approval. The “mercy” run rule states that the game will end with a run differential of 10 runs after five innings, or four-and-ahalf if the home team is ahead. The game ending procedure is a two-year experiment. Both of the new rules will be effective in the spring of 2018.
