Walton Girls Place Second at Oxford Hoop Tourney

Contributed Photo OXFORD — The Walton girls’ basketball team participated in the Holiday Tournament at Oxford on Dec. 28 and 29. In the opening round, the Warriors defeated the host Blackhawks, 58-36.

They were not as fortunate in the championship game, in which Greene posted a 60- 39 over Walton.

Warrior Coach Gary Backus stated, “Our sophomore center, McKenzie Clough had a very good tournament, scoring 21 points the first night and 14 the second night. She also hauled down a total of 26 rebounds, earning her a nod on the all-tournament team. Olivia Harby, a junior, also earned a spot on the all-tournament team, scoring a total of 22 points and grabbing 17 rebounds during the tournament.”

In a non-league game on Wednesday, the Warriors defeated visiting Margaretville, 59-30. The visitors won the first quarter, 13-11, after which the home forces took charge, with a 41-12 advantage in the middle periods.

Harby led the way with 22 points, with Clough tallying 12 points and Carissa Crandall scoring 11. Ithmar Silva netted 10 points and Kayla Petry got nine for the Blue Devils.
