CCTA Snowmobile Club to Host Hill Races in Andes

By Rosie Cunningham

ANDES - Participants and spectators are encouraged to turn out Feb. 24 for some snowmobile fun at the Bobcat Ski Center in Andes.

“We are back in business and will be hosting a hill race,” said President of the Central Catskill Trail Association (CCTA) Bill Day.

In the past, the CCTA has hosted snow cross races, but this year, Day said he is looking forward to the inaugural hill races.

“It’s been about 17 or 18 years since we have hosted the snow cross,” he said. “What makes it even better is that we have secured the lodge. Although we are paying to rent the location, it saves us money in having to rent a large, heated tent and a port-apotty and the parking is great.”

According to the president, the proceeds from the event will go towards grooming the vast trails that area snowmobilers and members of the community utilize.

“We just bought a groomer for $45,000,” said Day. “So, it will also be going towards that.”

For the snowmobile races, there will be a series classes (Kids, Stock, Trail Improved, Modified and Open Class) and the CCTA encourages the participation of the younger generation.

Day said there is a need for volunteers for multiple aspects of the organizational process and on the day of the event as well.

“We are also looking for more sponsors,” he added.

The race will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the gates will open at 8 a.m.

The Andes Hotel will host a beer and wine pig roast at 5 p.m., fireworks will be set off on the mountain at 6 p.m. and there will be a live band from 7 to 11 p.m.
