Athlete of the Week

Dawson Backus

There were several athletes who probably merited this week’s selection for this column, but one set of numbers clinched it — 214 yards on eight rushes. Those were the numbers for Sidney running back Dawson Backus in his team’s 54-28 victory over Walton on Friday night,

Dawson opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run. Early in the second quarter, he broke through for an 89-yard touchdown run. He also scored a twopoint conversion.

Sidney Head Coach Jeff Matthews commented, “Dawson had a severe ankle injury, which required surgery, so we didn’t know when, or if, he would be able to play at all. Fortunately, the doctor cleared him about the time practice started.”

The coach noted that Dawson rushed for 72 yards in the season opener, a narrow loss to Norwich. He gained 113 yards in the Warriors’ overtime win over Deposit/Hancock in week two, so this past week’s totals give him 399 yards on just 36 carries, an average of more than 11 yards per rush.
