The Walton Fire Department had 13 alarm activations in July. The department and auxiliary marched in the fireman’s anniversary parade in Downsville, and won three trophies. The fire police hurried back to help with traffic control for the car cruise, and the Explorers had their updated by-laws approved by the board of fire commissioners.

Summer is the time for thunderstorms. Don’t forget that lightning can be an unpredictable killer. If you are outside, do not assume you have plenty of time; head for safe shelter, but never under a tree, awning, or beach umbrella. If you are caught outside in the open, get down as low as you can and stay down. Lightning will strike anything that sticks up higher than its surroundings, especially metal. Use precautions in a storm and it will hopefully pass uneventfully. But never underestimate the power of Mother Nature. Also, do not get out of a car that has power lines down on it.

With fair week and all of its extra traffic, drive safely and watch out for pedestrians and let’s have a safe end to summer. Use extra caution and stay safe to and from, and while attending the fair. Stop at the Delaware County Fire Prevention tent to say hello (and maybe “thank you”). The Walton Fire Department and its Auxiliary, Emergency Squad, and the Explorers will be busy all week covering events.

The Delaware County Fair Firefighters Parade will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14. Lineup will begin at 2 p.m. The organizers encourage organizations, businesses and groups to march or bring a float. Call 607-832-5600 to get your group registered.
